“I’m locked in a titanium cage in the back of a silver vehicle,” Aurora messaged Shane, knowing all the while that her best friend must be sick with sadness, worry, and rage.

How’d they get her this time? She hadn’t even heard them come upon her. Her captors must have known how to circumnavigate her senses, wearing clothes that negated the sound of normal movement. No other way could they have snuck up behind her.

She remembered spotting Randy in the distance. The last thing she saw as they captured her was the look of horror on his face and the sudden determination in his eyes to rescue her. She’d flashed him a look of self-assuredness, demanding that he stay put and not get mixed up in a problem that she would have to deal with on her own.

“I’m coming after you,” Shane responded to her message. “I won’t let them take you away like this. Not again.”

What was it with men needing to rescue her? Did they not see her as capable? Had she not yet proven her abilities on enough occasions? “Please don’t,” she messaged Shane. “There’s absolutely nothing you can do. They have guns, and they’ll use them if anyone gets close. Wait until I tell you the time is right. I can keep myself safe for now.” She didn’t exactly know the last part with a hundred percent certitude. However, she knew for a fact that if Shane attempted anything now, they’d kill him, which was far worse than anything they might do to her.

She made every calculation she could regarding her surroundings. The diameter of each bar of her cage? Three quarters of an inch—too thick to bend. The speed of the car? Fifty miles per hour and accelerating. Number of brutes she’d have to fend off if she were to free herself? Three, not including the man behind the dashboard. Her chances of escaping from the car? For all intents and purposes, zero.

“So we got you again.” A short and muscular man turned around in his seat, showing a prideful smile. “You’re not escaping this time. If you do, we’ll fine Mr. Rucker double what we’re charging him today. You’re cute and all, but you definitely aren’t worth twenty million dollars.”

So Bill had to pay ten million dollars to get her back? Aurora didn’t have anything to say in response to the snarky comment, and so she grinned instead. She knew the technology used to create her had value, but she had no concept that she’d ever be worth that much to anyone. She found it terribly disturbing that someone would throw that kind of money around to cage her, especially considering that she’d done nothing wrong. The idea that Bill would lose millions of dollars when she finally freed herself from him for good, however, delighted her on the inside.

“You better keep an eye on her in case she tries to pull anything while we’re en route,” said the man at the helm.

“I’ll rip her
